Heartmusic!
Crossing boundaries - bringing gifts and styles together
Members of Heartmusic! believe that, as well as meeting together and making music for the joy of it, there lies a more pastoral and mission-based reason for its creation. They want to be a valuable musical resource for the diocese, enabling others to use and enjoy the hymns and songs they have discovered.
How can they help you?
Members of Heartmusic! may offer practical help in a number of ways:
- by leading, or taking part in, worship at diocesan, deanery or parish events
- by facilitating music workshops for deaneries or parishes
- by introducing different styles of worship, e.g. Celtic worship, Taizé worship or contemporary worship, to deaneries or parishes
Before contacting Heartmusic! please think through what your actual needs are and how many people would be involved.
Members of Heartmusic! will only agree to help if they feel that their expertise is appropriate - and when time and other commitments allow.
Members of Heartmusic! offer their expertise and time freely, but contributions to the Music Budget and travel expenses (the standard diocesan mileage rate), are expected and welcomed.

About Heartmusic!
Heartmusic! was formed in the Autumn of 2005. It was the next natural step in a musical journey that began in 2003 at the Guildford Diocesan Clergy Conference. A group of clergy - musicians and singers - formed an instant music group to lead the worship at that event. A slightly more organised group of clergy and lay musicians then enjoyed leading the music in Guildford Cathedral to celebrate 10 years of women's ordained ministry. In 2004, a large group from Guildford attended the National Network of Pastoral Musicians' Conference in Birmingham and in 2005 the Diocese hosted a major ecumenical music event in Guildford Cathedral with workshops led by nationally known composers and attended by over 500 people.
Heartmusic! has come about from all of this and also from an increasing desire to engage with and share pastoral music from all our different traditions. It is a loose affiliation of clergy and lay musicians who, as far as they are able, and about once a month, meet to make 'music from the heart'. They meet in the chapel at St Columba's House in Woking and have a budget from the diocese to help with buying new music.
Heartmusic! Events
Since its inception, Heartmusic! has helped with the worship at a number of events - among them the 2006 and 2009 Clergy Conferences, a second ecumenical music event in Guildford Cathedral, the Blessing of Oils service in Guildford Cathedral in Holy Week, Deanery Confirmation services, a Church Mission Society National Members' Day, Summer School, a Vigil Service for Surrey Hospitals, CME Study Days, the annual Diocesan Day on Prayer, LLM (Reader) Licensing Services, Songs of Praise at Willow Grange and the Leading Worship Course for lay people.
Heartmusic! keep a database of all the songs they have used. For more details, please contact Jan Brind
