WOKING INTERFAITH CRICKET FESTIVAL PROVES A HIT
Woking People of Faith organised a cricket festival on Sunday 4th July 2010 at Woking's Wheatsheaf grounds. Local churches and mosques put together four cricket teams who played against one another in two rounds. Each match was 12 overs. The winners of the first two matches played a final and the winning team (from the Shah Jahan mosque) were awarded winners' medals.
Woking People of Faith works to bring people together in order to facilitate understanding of one another's differences in faith and culture. The cricket festival was envisaged and lead by Naveed Hassnain, one of group's management committee members.
The afternoon began at 1pm with the first 12-over match, the second beginning about two hours later. There was a great atmosphere as teams watched one another play, and supporters enjoyed the competitive edge and the delicious hot food and cold drinks which were served at around 4pm. The final began around 6pm with loud and enthusiastic support and the Shah Jahan Mosque team emerged victorious as evening approached.
"This was a brilliant event - we look forward to doing it again next year and to setting up a tradition!" said Revd Richard Cook, chairperson.
